Blast is conceived as a collision point between two musical practices that organize sound, time, and performance according to deeply divergent, yet complementary, logics in their search for meaning. Developed in collaboration with Pe4enkata (Adriana Nikolova), the project does not seek a mere juxtaposition of genres, but a radical confrontation: a true “battle” between the rigor of the written tradition, embodied by Hannah Weirich (violin), Axel Porath (viola), Dirk Wietheger (cello) and Dirk Rothbrust (percussion), and the intrinsic fluidity of the oral beatbox culture.

The central challenge lies in overcoming a historical dichotomy: on one hand, the instrumental quartet, with its intellectual legacy and consolidated structures; on the other, beatboxing, a language born in marginalized communities that constantly challenges academic hierarchies and the boundaries of music education. In this encounter, the alleged “boldness” of beatboxing is never a gratuitous or superficial gesture, but the result of extraordinary technical complexity and vocal expertise, capable of reconfiguring sonic material in real time.

The work develops through continuous negotiation—made of experiments, conversations, and notations—that does not envision the instrumentalists merely accompanying the beatboxer. Each participant enters a space of resistance and transformation, in which the social and political dimension of making music becomes an integral part of the score. Blast is, therefore, not an endpoint, but a path of inquiry that questions the concepts of artistic gatekeeping, gender representation, and the very possibility of an authentic hybridization capable of pushing both instruments and the voice toward unexplored expressive territories.

Blast konfiguriert sich als ein Kollisionspunkt zwischen zwei musikalischen Praktiken, die Klang, Zeit und Performance nach zutiefst unterschiedlichen, aber in ihrer Sinnsuche komplementären Logiken organisieren. Das Projekt, das in Zusammenarbeit mit Pe4enkata (Adriana Nikolova) entwickelt wurde, sucht nicht nach einer bloßen Gegenüberstellung von Genres, sondern nach einer radikalen Konfrontation: ein wahrhaftiger „Kampf“ zwischen der Strenge der schriftlichen Tradition, verkörpert von Hannah Weirich (Violine), Axel Porath (Viola), Dirk Wietheger (Violoncello) und Dirk Rothbrust (Schlagzeug), und der inhärenten Fluidität der oralen Beatbox-Kultur.

Die zentrale Herausforderung liegt in der Überwindung einer historischen Dichotomie: auf der einen Seite das Instrumentalquartett mit seinem intellektuellen Erbe und seinen gefestigten Strukturen; auf der anderen Seite Beatboxing, eine in marginalisierten Gemeinschaften geborene Sprache, die akademische Hierarchien und die Grenzen der Musikerziehung ständig herausfordert. In dieser Begegnung ist die vermeintliche „Kühnheit“ des Beatboxings niemals eine willkürliche oder oberflächliche Geste, sondern das Ergebnis außergewöhnlicher technischer Komplexität und stimmlicher Expertise, die in der Lage ist, Klangmaterial in Echtzeit zu rekonfigurieren.

Das Werk entwickelt sich durch eine kontinuierliche Aushandlung – bestehend aus Experimenten, Gesprächen und Notationen –, die nicht vorsieht, dass die Instrumentalist:innen die Beatboxerin lediglich begleiten. Jeder Beteiligte begibt sich in einen Raum des Widerstands und der Transformation, in dem die soziale und politische Dimension des Musizierens integraler Bestandteil der Partitur wird. Blast ist daher kein Endpunkt, sondern ein Forschungsweg, der die Konzepte des künstlerischen Gatekeepings, der Geschlechterrepräsentation und die Möglichkeit einer authentischen Hybridisierung hinterfragt, die in der Lage ist, sowohl Instrumente als auch die Stimme in bisher unerforschte Ausdrucksgebiete zu treiben.

Blast si configura come un punto di collisione tra due pratiche musicali che organizzano suono, tempo e performance secondo logiche profondamente distanti, eppure complementari nella loro ricerca di senso. Sviluppato in stretta collaborazione con Pe4enkata (Adriana Nikolova), il progetto non cerca una mera giustapposizione di generi, ma un confronto radicale: una vera e propria “battaglia” tra il rigore della tradizione scritta, incarnato da Hannah Weirich (violino), Axel Porath (viola), Dirk Wietheger (violoncello) e Dirk Rothbrust (percussioni), e la fluidità intrinseca della cultura orale del beatbox.

La sfida centrale risiede nel superamento di una dicotomia storica: da un lato, il quartetto strumentale, con la sua eredità intellettuale e le sue strutture consolidate; dall’altro, il beatboxing, linguaggio nato nelle comunità marginalizzate che sfida costantemente le gerarchie accademiche e i confini dell’educazione musicale. In questo incontro, la presunta “audacia” del beatbox non è mai un gesto gratuito o di superficie, bensì l’esito di una complessità tecnica e di una perizia vocale straordinarie, capace di riconfigurare la materia sonora in tempo reale.

Il lavoro si sviluppa attraverso una negoziazione continua — fatta di esperimenti, conversazioni e notazioni — che non prevede che gli strumentisti si limitino ad accompagnare la beatboxer. Ogni partecipante entra in uno spazio di resistenza e trasformazione, in cui la dimensione sociale e politica del fare musica diventa parte integrante della partitura. Blast non è quindi un punto d’arrivo, ma un percorso d’indagine che interroga i concetti di gatekeeping artistico, rappresentazione di genere e la possibilità stessa di un’ibridazione autentica, capace di spingere sia gli strumenti che la voce verso territori espressivi ancora inesplorati.
